Dr. Westchesterson began his career in 2012 as the most famous rapper in Western Massachusetts when his single and music video “413” went viral and turned the Dr. into an overnight cultural sensation/regional icon. In the years since Dr. W has garnered a cult following thanks in no small part to his energetic live hip hop show which has graced stages all over the northeast.
Yet while his hip hop roots may be firmly planted in the rolling hills of the Berkshires- Block Island, Rhode Island serves as homebase for the Dr.’s musical exploits. Every summer Captain Nick’s Rock n’ Roll Bar (Block Island’s premiere nightclub and live music venue) becomes Dr. Westchesterson’s musical clubhouse. His Piano Bar and Sunday afternoon gigs with The Young Guns have become the stuff of legend. On Monday nights the Dr.’s skills behind the turntables are on full display as he curates Disco Night and keeps the booties shaking all night long.
Considering Dr. Westchesterson’s twenty-five-year tenure as one of Block Island’s most enigmatic characters it’s not surprising that the salt air and island vibes have infiltrated his consciousness and influenced his musical offerings. When the Global Pandemic hit in March 2020 the Dr. holed up in his Mystic, Connecticut recording studio to create a collection of songs seeking to bottle Block Island’s easy-going, sun-soaked, sand and sea atmosphere.
However, just as work on the album began…tragedy struck. In late April 2020 both of Dr. Westchesterson’s parents lost their lives to the Covid-19 virus within two weeks of each other. Determined to turn his grief into something beautiful, the Dr. plunged headfirst into creating an album that can only be described as a modern-day Yacht Rock masterpiece.
The resulting album, “Better Days Ahead” is populated with hook-laden, upbeat songs that perfectly encapsulate the smooth So-Cal 70’s sound of artists like; Steely Dan, The Eagles and Jackson Brown. The album was made with the help of top-notch musicians including; iconic sax player Tim Cappello (Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel), vocalist Sammi Garett (Turkuaz), producer/bassist Floyd Kellogg (Andy Frasco & the UN) and The Horn Section members Greg Sanderson and Chris Brouwers (Zac Brown Band). Released in July 2022, the album has already garnered acclaim.
As his Block Island summer came to an end, the Dr. set out to form a band skilled enough to handle the intricate tunes. Calling on island friends; Rob Davis and Dave Lefkin along with Mystic Dead members Ian Kelly and Marty Moroney, the Dr. has assembled a dream team of shoreline-based musicians to bring the songs on “Better Days Ahead” to the masses.
